Beerste Update

Dear Beerster Fans,

PeeWee and I are having a ball doing the Great Race. We got our feet wet today with our first timed rally. We were doing really great until I missed a turn. Bummer! We wound up in last place, but, we did finish. Harry and Danny have been their usual great job as our support team. I can’t wait until I can fully tell you about their efforts in building a complete set of breathers for the car.  I haven’t up to this point been able to put together a good blog. We’ve been just too tired and no WIFI available.

For those who would like to see our daily progress, go to www.GreatRace.Com and check out our status. Great Race officials said they would be posting pics too.

Wish us luck,

To all Beerster Fans

So far so good. PeeWee and I are rapidly transiting the U.S. with the Beerster in tow.

PeeWee` started out on Saturday morning at 4:30.AM. “Of coarse”, he was supposed to leave at 500AM, but, I think he got ants in his pants. I was just getting my daughter Lori and my grandson Justin up to meet PeeWee on the 10 Freeway at Highland Springs (around Beaumont). Well I was in the garage getting things in the truck when “Ring, Ring” hey its me and I’m in Riverside. Oh sh-t, I need to get out of here and we did. We arrived at our designated spot just about at the perfect time. We threw my things into the van and away we were off.

We saw some interesting stuff along the way, Camp Mowabi and then outside of Flagstaff, how about two trucks slammed into a ditch and Oh yes, an airplane that landed on the 40 East. People were OK, but, were definitely shook up. The plane hooked to the right and landed with the props bent.

Our fist stop was at the end grueling drive. 660 miles to Gallop New Mexico. What a pretty place. Multi-colored cliffs with depressions that the Indians used to live in some time ago, and a lot of green. Colors that you cant imagine. The first picture I posted is of PeeWee doing what he does best. He opened a beer and got on his computer to check out what was happening in the Wire Cut world.

The next day it was off to Amarillo Texas. 420 mile of more beautiful countryside and we were there. I kind-a got PeeWee lost. We went to the wrong Best Western, but, thought that since we were there, why not stay. Well the guy at the desk said that we could not park the trailer on the property, but, in a vacant lot. We decided to tell him to go To H-ll and we went to our originally booked Best Western. The best one yet! A really nice gal at the front desk that was more than willing to let the Beerster stay. Her name was Bliss and she got a Beerster sticker.

6:30 on the 25th, we were off to Arkansas. We drove a speedy 440 miles and saw some rain. PeeWee also saw a trailer full of rust and we had to stop and see what was there.  A bunch of tractor stuff that was really interesting, however, too heavy for the trailer it was on. The owner said that he had already had two flats and was expecting more. He thought the rain would keep the hubs cool. OK? (See the picture of PeeWee with the tractor man).

Along the way we were bothered by the swaying of the trailer every time big rig would pass us. We found a Camper World in El Reno Oklahoma. The next picture is of PeeWee at the Best Western in Arkansas installing the anti sway bar. I did all the muscle work and took the pictures. Thanks PeeWee. You can buy me a beer at Chilli’s around the corner.

Next Blog Tennessee and then Concord. I cant wait.

Die BeeRster Jungen mit dem BeerSter Haus

I thought our friends and sponsors would like to see some shots PeeWee took of our crew Danny Fitzgerald (our evil eye QA man) and Harry Klaus (artist extraordinary). A must see is PeeWee's trailer adorned with our logo and sponsor decals. Check it out.

Ready-Set-Go!

Well it's less than twenty days till PeeWee and I are off to Concord. The last few weeks have been probably the most important time spent on the BeerSter. Three weeks ago PeeWee found that the pinion gear in the rear end was loose. He reminded me that he took the transmission out of the car 15 times over the last year trying to find the cause of the grinding noise emanating from the transmission, when it was the rear end all the time. Good Grief!  With the rear end fixed the transmission is as quiet as a mouse and really smooth. Another spectacular improvement to the car was Harry Klaus's rendering of our number "68". I can't describe how good it looks, but, it is the one item that puts the finishing stroke to the car which is indeed a piece of fine art.

Two weeks ago, our fellow BeerSter Boy Danny Fitzgerald and PeeWee spent 9 hours tuning the Winfields. They had to stop when PeeWee's neighbor complained about the noise and carbon monoxide filling his house. At any rate, the boys made giant improvements on the carburetion system.

This last weekend, I went up to Garden Grove to spend some time detailing some things on the BeerSter and to drop off more tools and spares. PeeWee and I went for a ride up to Hillco where we got some T shirts for the race. Many thanks top Jack Hill, who is going to go on next years Great Race on the New York to Vancouver leg.  During or little ride, I couldn't believe how nice the car ran and how comfortable it has become. Great job PeeWee!

The bad thing about the car running so good is that PeeWee's lead foot is now getting exercised. I know that I'm going to have to bitch at him about his speed during the race, especially going around corners. He thinks he's Barney Oldfield.

For those who want to see the car before the race, PeeWee is going to drive it out to the LA Roadster show on Saturday the 16 of June.

Next Blog and picture will be from the race. Wish us well and we'll see you in Anaheim.
